“My visa is valid for five years, so I can stay as long as I like” and “my days reset on 1 January” are two expensive myths. The rule for short stays is simple: no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. What is new is that it is now tracked digitally rather than by passport stamps.
How does the rolling window work?
For every day you are in the Schengen area, look back 180 days; the days spent inside during that window must not exceed 90. Entry and exit days both count, and the rule applies to the whole area, not per country.
To check a plan, take the last day of your trip, count back 180 days and add up all Schengen days including the new trip. The European Commission’s official short-stay calculator helps avoid manual errors.
Worked examples
Someone who enters on 1 June and leaves on 29 August has used all 90 days and cannot make a short trip in October; a full allowance returns roughly 90 days after exit. A traveller spending 10 days a month uses about 60 days per window and is fine; at 16 days a month the limit is exceeded. Leaving the area for a week does not reset anything.
What did EES change?
The Entry/Exit System digitally records passport data, facial image, fingerprints and the date and place of each crossing for non-EU short-stay travellers, including Turkish visa holders. Remaining days are calculated automatically, so overstays are visible immediately. Allow extra time at the border for first registration.
Common mistakes and ETIAS
Visa validity is not the right to stay; the 90/180 limit still applies, and the “duration of stay” on your visa sticker may be lower. Nothing resets with the calendar year. Even a one-day overstay is recorded and can lead to fines, removal or an entry ban.
ETIAS is only for visa-exempt travellers. Turkish citizens travelling on ordinary passports with a visa are not covered by it.
Next step
Special cases such as national long-stay visas can change the calculation. Verify current rules with the European Commission’s official calculator and the border authorities of your destination.
