Schengen Visa Refusal: Common Reasons and How to Reapply

Received a Schengen visa refusal? Learn how to read the refusal form, the most common grounds, appeal versus reapplication and what to change in your file.

A refusal is frustrating but not a permanent mark. It usually means one part of your file failed to convince the officer. The worst response is to take the same file to another consulate a week later. The best is to understand what the refusal letter is telling you.

Reading the refusal form

All Schengen countries use a standard form with numbered grounds, and the ones that apply to you are ticked. The wording is short and general, so read it side by side with your own file and ask which document raised the doubt. The lower part explains your right to appeal and the deadline, which vary by country.

The most common grounds

Purpose and conditions of stay not justified; insufficient means of subsistence; reasonable doubt about your intention to return; information found unreliable. Invalid travel insurance and suspected false documents also appear on the form.

The “intention to return” ground is not personal. Officers only see the ties in your file: stable employment, an active business, studies, family, property and a record of returning on time.

Financial documents

A lump sum deposited just before applying is easy to spot. Regular account activity consistent with your income is far more convincing than a large balance. If someone sponsors you, document the relationship and their finances.

Appeal or reapply?

An appeal makes sense if you believe the consulate misjudged documents it already had. If something was genuinely missing, reapplying with a corrected file is usually faster. There is no general waiting period, but an unchanged file will likely get the same answer. The fee is not refunded: €90 for adults, €45 for ages 6-12.

Address the ticked ground directly, add a short cover letter explaining what has changed, never hide the earlier refusal and never use false documents.
