Poland Work Permit: The Real Process and Fake Job Offers

How a Poland work permit really works: the employer applies, you need a type D visa, the single permit lasts up to three years. Plus how to spot fake offers.

Demand for work in Poland has grown, and so have “guaranteed work permit” adverts, upfront fees and factories that do not exist. The real process is clear, and knowing it is your best protection.

Who applies for the work permit?

Not you. The Polish employer applies to the voivodeship authority, and the permit is issued for a specific employer, position and set of conditions. Without a real employer and a real job there can be no permit. If the employer changes, a new permit is generally required.

Under the law that took effect in 2025, applications are handled electronically through the official online system, and sanctions for sham employment are tougher. A serious employer can show you documents from a traceable process.

Why do you need a type D visa?

With the permit, you apply for a national type D work visa at the Polish consulate in Türkiye. Working on a short-stay Schengen visa is illegal, and “come as a tourist, we will convert it” puts all your future visas at risk. The permit does not guarantee the visa; the consulate decides.

What is the single permit?

Once you are legally working in Poland, the usual way to extend your stay is the temporary residence and work permit, known as the single permit. It combines both rights, is granted for up to three years and is tied to your employer. You apply yourself at the voivodeship office before your legal stay ends. It gives no right to work in other EU countries.

How to spot a fake job offer

Warning signs: large upfront payments before any document exists; guarantees of a permit or visa; an employer you cannot find in Poland’s public company registers; contact only through messaging apps and free email; high pay with no language or experience requirement; no interview and no draft contract.

Ask for the company’s full name and registry number, a written draft contract, and later a copy of the permit. A genuine employer will not mind a week of verification.
