Getting the immigrant visa is a milestone, but settling in is a chain of small linked steps. Without an address your cards cannot arrive, without an SSN many doors stay closed, and without credit history renting is harder.
Get the order right and the first 90 days become far calmer.
Before you fly
An immigrant visa is generally valid for up to six months, and you must make your first entry within that time. Check the exact date on the visa. Pay the USCIS immigrant fee before travelling so your card is not delayed, and consider flying straight to the state where you will live.
SSN, Green Card and your address
If you requested an SSN on your visa application, the card is mailed in the weeks after arrival; otherwise visit a Social Security Administration office. The Green Card also arrives by post, and your stamped immigrant visa serves as temporary proof meanwhile.
A reliable mailing address is therefore essential. If you move, you are legally required to report the new address to USCIS.
Bank, phone and credit history
Many banks open accounts with a passport, immigrant visa and proof of address; some wait for the SSN. Prepaid phone plans avoid credit checks. To start building credit, a secured credit card used regularly and paid on time is the most common route. It takes months, so begin early.
Housing, licence and budget
Landlords usually ask for a credit score and income proof. Newcomers can offer a larger deposit, a guarantor, bank statements or a job offer letter. Start with short-term furnished housing and never pay for a home you have not seen.
Driver’s licence rules vary by state and usually require your SSN and two proofs of address. When budgeting, include temporary housing, deposit, furniture, transport and, above all, health insurance.
