Green Card

Can You Lose a Green Card by Staying in Türkiye Too Long?

Can a Green Card be lost through long stays abroad? Learn how absences are judged, when a re-entry permit is needed and how citizenship timing is affected.

Many new permanent residents still have part of their life in Türkiye: ageing parents, property, a business. The natural question is how long they can stay away.

There is no single number. A Green Card is not a travel document; it is a status tied to living permanently in the United States. Officers look at where your life is centred, not only at the calendar.

What does “abandonment” mean?

Permanent resident status can be lost if officials conclude you have stopped living in the U.S. They consider the length of your absence, whether the trip had a temporary purpose, your ties such as home, job, family and bank accounts, and whether you file taxes as a U.S. resident.

Short visits to the U.S. every few months do not protect you if your real life is elsewhere.

How long is too long?

Visits of a few weeks or months rarely cause problems. As a general understanding, absences approaching or exceeding six months invite closer questioning at the border.

For an absence of one year or more, the Green Card alone no longer works as a re-entry document. You need a re-entry permit, obtained before you leave.

How does a re-entry permit work?

A re-entry permit is valid for up to two years. You must apply while physically in the U.S. and attend a biometrics appointment, so plan months ahead of your flight. It is not absolute protection; you are still expected to maintain U.S. ties.

What about citizenship?

The general rule for naturalisation is five years of continuous permanent residence, plus substantial physical presence. Long absences can break continuity and largely restart the clock. A re-entry permit helps protect the Green Card, but it does not preserve continuous residence for citizenship.
